SpeechTest app for iPhone and iPad

SpeechTest is a tool for measuring the vocal maturation of boys through pubertal change. It works by measuring average spoken pitch while counting backwards from 20 and comparing the result to expected values in relation to larynx growth in males.

Designed for a research study to compare vocal maturation with pubertal development, the app aims to provide a clear indication of a boy’s progress without being invasive. With the ability to save results, it is possible to examine progression over time, simply by using the app on a regular basis.

SpeechTest was developed for a research team and is based on a prototype written by Professor David M Howard (University of York). The team comprises Professor Martin Ashley (Edge Hill University), Professor Gary Butler (University College Hospital, London) and Professor David M Howard (University of York).
